the weight on his back served as a reminder. with every determined swing, thoughts flickered to it's previous owner: dark hair, a bright smile and a look of assurance.

both savior and tormentor, after battle it was locked into place. as if to further prove it's reliability, it always remained within reach. a gift of the grave. victory spoils drenched in blood...

"the most important thing is to look after yourself."

gloved hands and bangles of metal. so rare it was for him to be out of breath. the biggest mistake was to think at all. depths of darkness could easily be plunged into, but were always ignored. the day that this would catch up to him remained safely at a distance. in a hard bed in the midst of a long journey, it was nearly impossible to be alone. it could be that he intentionally avoided solitude now. night time was unfavorable. the danger of letting his mind wander couldn't be fought off with materia or might. even when the sky was bright, it only reminded him of that smile ; a thing he could now only see in memory.

when he closed his eyes he saw green. there was a distinct feeling of floating. a voice rambling on about specimens and percentages. dreaming was hardly a comfort. it was better to be awake despite the fact that reflective surfaces gave him no escape. the glow of mako was a mark he took pride in but underneath there was a feeling of unease.

he heard the voice speak again: "you can just keep running. no need to look back. "

he was lucky not to be in short supply.
